Geography and L.A. History
July 7-11
Places and Time: a Look at L.A. History and Geography
This institute for K-12 teachers is held in partnership with the Automobile Club of Southern California. We will spend 5 days using the exceptional maps and photos of Southern California housed in the Auto Club Archives. Teachers will have an opportunity to develop lesson plans using material from the archives and will receive a $350 stipend upon completion of a lesson. Each participant will also receive $150 worth of books and curricular resources. 3.5 UCLA extension credits are available for a fee. The institute will be held at the Auto Club headquarters, 2601 S. Figueroa St (near USC).
U.S. History
July 16th-July 18th and July 24th -25th
Isolationism to Intervention in U.S. Foreign Policy
This institute is held in partnership with the Glendale Unified School District’s Teaching American History Office. This 5-day program will take a focused look at U.S. foreign policy beginning with the Washington Administration to the end of the Cold War. Noted UCLA historians will share their insights into pivotal events and people who shaped this policy. The institute will be held at the Glendale Professional Development Center in Glendale. Sessions will run from 2:30-7:30 p.m. on 7/16, 7/17, and 7/24. On 7/18 and 7/25 the program will be run from 8:30-3 p.m. Cost to attend is $100 for non-Glendale USD teachers. UCLA Extension quarter units are available for an additional fee.
August 4-6 or August 13-15
Democratic Ideals and Milestone Documents
These three-day workshops are held in partnership with LAUSD Local District 7 Teaching American History Grant. The focus of these two programs will be the growth of democratic ideas in the U.S. from the colonial period to the present day. There is a $75 fee per workshop for non-LD 7 teachers to attend. The location for these events is to be determined.
World History
July 28-August 1st and August 4th-8th
Monks, Merchants and Millworkers: Connecting Europe and Asia in World History
This two-week institute for World History teachers is being held in cooperation with the Anderson School’s CIBER program, the Center for European and Eurasian Studies, and the Asia Institute. Focusing on trade, exploration and the impact of industrialization and imperialism from the 6th century to the end of the 19th century, we will explore the connections between Europe and Asia and look at economic issues in the World History standards. Cost to attend is $100. UCLA Extension quarter units are available for a fee.
