Science Project
The UCLA Science Project is one of 18 statewide sites of the California Science Project, funded by State Legislation and NCLB funds. The UCLA Science Project brings together teachers and the expertise of UCLA’s Science professors to create programs for K-12 educators that consist of science content, academic language development, and effective instructional strategies geared to increase student achievement in the science classroom.
The goal of the UCLA Science Project is to design and implement programs that identify, develop, and promote strategies that make good science instruction accessible to all students whatever their academic, cultural, or socio-economic backgrounds.
Keeping in line with the vision of the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, “Where research and practice intersect”, the UCLA Science Project Works with both new and retrained educators in science to provide support in science content and workshops that model recent science research and opportunities that nurture leadership in science educators. These programs allow all students of various backgrounds equal access to quality science education based on national and state standards by exposing educators to cutting edge science, technology and research.
The UCLA Science Project facilitates a number of institutes for K-12 teachers throughout the year. All the institutes consist of science content, academic language development, and effective instructional strategies geared to increase student achievement in the science classrooms. All the content sessions are based on the California Science and English Language Development Content Standards.
Mission Statement
The UCLA Science Project believes that all programs must practice what they preach and together with a team of professional teachers and leaders, the UCLA Science Project in association with the California Science Project, is dedicated in bringing new research and techniques to all teachers and students in science.
Teacher Resources
Leadership Institutes: The UCLA Science Project Leadership Institutes provide teachers with the opportunity to be learners and professionals at the same time. Teachers collaborate on modifying lessons in order to create effective Understanding by Design curriculum on various science topics. Institutes provide intensive and varied study of science content in line with the California State Standards on Science.
Follow Up Workshops: There are various follow up workshops held during the academic year that support teachers as they integrate their new expertise into effective science instruction for their students and work with colleagues to strengthen their school’s science instructional program. These workshops, along with the institutes, give teacher participants an opportunity to work with each other, teacher leaders, university faculty and experts in the field.
English Language Development: The goal of English Language Development is to make science more accessible to ELL students while increasing student’s science content knowledge through the implementation of ELD strategies, ELD standards-based instruction, content-based instruction and the integration of language learning techniques.
AP Readiness Program: The AP Readiness Program provides support for both teacher and students in Advanced Placement Science and math courses. Working with master AP teachers, both new AP teachers and students build a strong conceptual foundation in their subject areas that will allow them to excel in their Advanced Placement Course. This format of professional development directly benefits both teachers and students.
Coaching: The UCLA Science Project provides school site coaching to educators and schools on a regular basis. Coaching provides teachers the continuity that is essential to support their own growth and students success.
Inquiry Institutes: The UCLA Science Project also provides inquiry-based institutes that are designed to increase the leadership and the capacity of educators to engage in science education that will result in a high quality, inquiry-rich and standards-based science education program for all students.
