In 1997, the Institute of the Environment was awarded a four-year NSF grant to provide follow-up meetings and support for the GLOBE in the City program. The goals of GLOBE in the City are to:
- Build and sustain an online community of K-12 science teachers in the Los Angeles area
- Work with trained GLOBE teachers to use GLOBE protocols in their science curriculum
- Refresh, update and practice the protocols and learning activities
- Help create curricular connections and integration matrices
- Develop projects to provide meaningful data sets
- Link GLOBE protocols to GIS options
