Cloud Cover Observation

-
    Grade Levels
    3-12

    Estimated Time:
    5 Minutes

-
    Summary
The cloud cover measurement refers to the amount of clouds (in tenths) of the sky that is covered by clouds. This measurement should be taken at the same time as the cloud type measurement. There are four cloud cover classifications: Clear, Scattered Clouds, Broken Clouds, Overcast.

    How to Observe Cloud Type
Students must first pick a location from which clouds can clearly be seen. Students then work together to identify clouds using the four classifications for cloud cover measurement. Note: Scattered clouds tend to have more blue sky.

    • Clear – A clear sky is either cloudless or clouds cover less than one-tenth of the sky.
    • Scattered Clouds – Clouds cover one-tenth to five-tenths of the sky.
    • Broken Clouds – Clouds cover greater than five-tenths through nine-tenths of the sky.
    • Overcast – Clouds cover more than nine-tenths of the sky.
