Important Facts

The Center for Marine Studies is a facility operated by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Ms. Jeanine Mauch is the Director of Educational Programs, and the onsite teacher. She is also GLOBE-certified. The Center provides curricular programs for grades Pre-K to 12. Topics include specialized science, and advanced laboratory science. Lessons are from 1 to 2 hours.

Intense environmental studies are also available. Overnight 2 day or 3 day programs can be arranged for the study of marine environment, sandy shores, oceanographic study cruise, and many other related topics. Ms. Mauch can customize a curriculum to meet the needs of the students, and teacher in-service and training. GLOBE and Ocean GLOBE protocol training is also available at the Center. The Marine Mammal Care Center is located next to the Center for Marine Studies. Students can view seals and sea lions that are being treated for injuries and illness.

      Hours open:
8am - 4pm on school days by appointment. Facility operates on a year round multi-track calendar.

Cost of admission:
Programs are free, but there is a charge of $25 to cover cost of materials, unless other arrangements are made.

Handicap access:
Building, yes. Surrounding hills (slopes), no.

Restrooms: Yes.

Telephones:
Yes. Office telephone available for official school business. Public telephones are located near the Korean Freedom Bell, and the San Pedro Skill Center.

Food availability:

Teachers could also choose to transport students to the park on Pacific Ave., just south and downhill from the Bell to eat lunch.

Yes, but best to bring bottled water.

Equipment needed at site:
Microscopes, profile equipment, ropes, computers are available for use at the Center, but you may need to bring shovels and pH paper to perform certain protocols.

What you should know before you go:
The Center for Marine Studies would be an excellent training facility for some GLOBE protocols. Not many opportunities for data collection by trained students.

Pitfalls:
Many GLOBE protocols cannot be performed at this site.

Safety precautions:
Sunscreen is highly recommended. Students should be able to recognize black widow spiders. Students should not be allowed to venture beyond the southern cement area at the Korean Freedom Bell. The land slopes downward sharply at that point.
