Unless otherwise noted, all written work and compiling of bibliographic data was done by Claude Henry Potts. The majority of pre-1972 entries were taken from Jacqueline Covo's important bibliography, The Blinking Eye: Ralph Waldo Ellison and his American, French, German and Italian Critics (Metuchen NJ: Scarecrow Press, 1974). Other books which were extremely helpful include: Kerry McSweeney's Invisible Man: Race and Identity (Boston: Twayne Publishers, 1988), Robert O'Meally's The Craft of Ralph Ellison (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1982), and Weixlmann and O'Banion's update to Covo's book, "A Checklist of Ellison Criticism, 1972-78," Black American Literature Forum 12 (1974). Additional entries were found and verified using the following online bibliographic utilities: OCLC's WCAT, the University of California's MELVYL, RLIN, and the Modern Language Association's Humanities Index.
The photograph of Ralph Ellison in the upper right hand corner of the site belongs to the The National Archives (1961 photo) and is in the public domain. The copyrights for the other three photographs used in the image gallery are held by the following persons and/or entities themselves and any inquiries regarding future use of these photographs should be directed to them: Twayne Publishers (1952 photo), Nancy Crampton (1975 photo), and Dorothy Alexander (1994 photo).
